Hemisphere progress

In the middle of August I noticed that Sheila Christensen was running a mystery triangle quiltalong. The fun had started at the beginning of July, so I was well behind the schedule, and hadn't looked out any fabrics yet. I registered immediately, and I'm so glad I did. Sheila broadcasts live on her video channel weekly at 10:00h on Thursdays - that's 10 a.m. in New Zealand, and about 02:00h here! Fortunately for me the broadcasts are recorded and posted on her video channel. The block patterns are being published once a week for 26 weeks and during the broadcast Sheila shows how to make the latest pieced unit.

I posted the photo of my first block on 31 August and now I have seven blocks:

random layout; they are really half hexagons and will be completed in the final step.

This may look like EPP but, no way! I would never attempt such a complicated EPP design; for me that is for "patchwork on the move"! Apart from cutting strips of fabric - everything here has been cut from 1.5", 2.5" or 4.5" strips - all the pieces have been cut using a 60 degree ruler. The blocks look complicated, but really they come together easily, and the cutting is not hard once you've watched the video!

Last year I made the Mini Wonders table runner from a pattern Sheila had published in instalments in Make Modern Magazine, so I was already used to her method, but now I am learning the finer points and have more insight into the calculations. These blocks have so far been easier than the hexagons in the Mini Wonders table runner.

Red September

September's colour for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is red.

My red pieces for my Scrap Snap Quilts have been cut, but as yet none are sewn. 

I'll be sewing them as leaders and enders, but at the moment I'm sewing reverse appliqué that starts in the middle of a block, as part of the Bernina Sugaridoo QAL; no L&E required until I sew the row together. I hope that will be finished by the end of the coming week, so next week I should have more red to show.

One Monthly Goal for September

 

 ... has several parts: to make parts 1 to 8 of Sheila Christensen's "Hemisphere" Quilt Along.

 

 

I joined the QAL a couple of weeks ago, more than a month after the start, and so far have made just two blocks.

 

Block 1; that's navy, not black

 

 

Block 2; it's still navy

 

Block 8 was released last Thursday; if I make two a week I'll reach my goal! Three a week !! and I'll have caught up altogether!

 

This isn't the only thing on my to-do list this month, so - fingers crossed!

Granddaughter's shoulder bag

My one monthly goal for August was to make a bag for my nineteen-month-old granddaughter. I posted a photo of the pattern and the fabric I'd be using. But then plans changed.

It started with the partial collapse of a wardrobe, followed by the removal of the contents into storage boxes and the transfer of a lot of old stuff to the recycling and the dump. Among the mixed handwork items on one of the shelves was a little piece of machine sewn crazy quilting that I had tried my hand at eight years ago; just the right size for a bag for a little girl to put her hanky in!

No pattern, just improvising by trial and error:

so her twin brother decided he'd like to try it

It looks like I'll have to make something for him too.

Purple Snap Scrap

Purple is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour of the month.

 

I posted a photo of my beads blocks earlier in the month, but here are my ten Snap Scrap blocks for August:

Purple beads and more purple sewing

This month's RSC colour is purple. I've made my purple bead blocks:

and made a start on the Scrap Snap blocks from the fabric I had prepared last week:

For the person who wrote last week that she didn't understand the blocks here is a summary of the process:

The blocks are made from the partly assembled units in the box. Each month there are ten finished blocks in the colour of the month, and each block has a different layout of the parts.

I sewed the first block as leaders and enders while making the bead blocks, which is why the second block, although nearly finished, is still under the needle. Next time I start sewing it will be the leader into the next seam. For more on leaders and enders check here.

It's a purple August

Angela at soscrappy has chosen purple for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour this month.

No sewing in purple yet, but I've cut the purple pieces for the Scrap Snap quilt.

The first part of making the blocks each month lends itself very well to being leaders and enders, so that is how these will be sewn together.
