RSC 17 February aqua

Angela at soscrappy gave aqua as the colour for February and this week I made a few more 9-patches and some half hour-glass blocks as leaders and enders

Leaders and Enders!
and a couple of Jacob's Ladder blocks.

12" Jacob's Ladder blocks, pattern from Quilter's Cache

I'm not really happy with these for my rainbow project this year because the blocks are too big and the pieces are too big: 4.5" strips don't count as scraps in my book, at least not in the length they need to be here. Bad choice!

However I did find a photo on Internet, labelled Jacob's Ladder, but a 4-patch variation with small triangles and lending itself much better to using scraps. I have drawn the pattern,

and shall be making it each month using either 2" or 2.5" strips in the month's colour for the "ladder" and another for the corner squares. Nothing to show yet but let's hope that this works!

The two blocks I have just made are going into the orphan box, but I plan on using them in a blue/teal/green and white quilt, and that won't come from my scrap box!

I'm looking forward to March's colour which is still a mystery now RED.

Happy sewing

Orphan blocks sometimes turn into the most interesting things - a pillow cover, mug mats, pot holders, plant mats . . . happy for you that you found/devised a smaller scale version that fits your scraps better.

Jacob's Ladders in any shape or size are always good scrap busters. I've never seen your drawn (or if I have I didn't know it was Jacob's Ladder variation) variation...looks interesting.

I do have 4.5 inch scraps...when I make quilts where I cut into fabric seems a lot of leftovers commonly end up 4.5, 2.5, 1.5 so I have scrap boxes with those sizes.

I like the aquas you have in these blocks--it is hard to make blocks fit what one has on hand I find...will be watching to see how that new Jacob's Ladder comes out...hugs, Julierose

I really like your large Jacob's Ladders, but the small one you drew up looks really interesting, too! Have fun playing with it!

Pretty AQUA scraps!! Sorry to hear that your 2017 block choice isn't working out for you. Here's hoping the revised plan works better!

Why not use them as high points in with many different sizes? They are a standout. I love the block because of the, diagonal element, which gives movement and not many blocks do that. Can't wait to see http://superscrappy.blogspot.com/2017/03/scraphappy-saturday-ready-for-red.htmlhat you do with red.

Hmm. Your drawn variation is interesting. I love quilts that have different sizes of the same block. It takes a little planning to get the final setting to work but well worth it.

I love Jacob's Ladder, still haven't made a quilt using it, but oh, I do love your aqua blocks! This year my second RSC project is made with 6" squares!! Cut across the diagonal twice and paired with white, and yeah, I don't have scraps that big, well a few, but they are in my 'rolls' section which is 1/4 yard and less, both scraps and stash purchases. So I am fussy-cutting some of the quarter squares especially since both my purple and aqua scraps are not plentiful, and using some of the rolls that I did bring down with me...

I agree with Alycia. The bigger the blocks the faster the quilt gets together! I like all of your blocks. I have so many scraps that I am glad to use the bigger pieces when I can.

If you've got lots of scraps to use the smaller blocks will help with that. I really like all your aqua blocks. Hope you find a home for all of them. They are too pretty to sit in the orphan quilt box.

I love all those blocks!
That variation looks really interesting! I haven't seen it before, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it's going to look.

I'm finding orphan blocks make a great strip on the back of the quilt. So fun! Good luck with those little jacobs ladders.
