RSC week 12: crumby yellow

Each month Angela at Soscrappy, who is hosting the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, gives a colour to use, and a lot of people world-wide use their scraps in that colour to make Angela's sampler, or anything else that takes their fancy. This month's colour is yellow, and having made my sampler blocks a few weeks ago, I've turned to sewing crumbs.

Crumbs no more!

Many of these pieces were only an inch wide, some strange shapes left from cutting hexagons. This whole piece is now about 9"wide; I can get one 4" square or two 3" squares out of it and use the leftovers to start the next piece of made fabric. I shan't though, yet. I don't have any more crumbs, except a few solids, and anything larger than 2.5" square I'm saving for the alternate blocks in the sampler. I wonder how small a cut-off has to be to be too small to reuse. I'd love to hear your ideas.

I also made my first sewing machine a very pale yellow, for the Quilt Doodle quilt along. The machine wasn't really yellow, more beige, but there's no beige in my stash, so yellow it has become.

My first sewing machine:
a Helvetia my mother bought in the mid 1950's
I need to embellish it more using buttons for the controls, but I'll only add those when I quilt it, and I think there should be some thread coming off the reel, don't you?

So that's all my yellow for this week.

I'm linking up to Soscrappy for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Hop over there for more of this week's yellow happiness.

Happy sewing

Marly.

I've been trying to buy more yellow and orange fabric, because whenever I am faced with a rainbow project, those are the two colors I never have enough of!

Some of your pieces are so small!

Love your fun made fabric. My cut off point is
1) anything smaller than 2" square
or
2)anything smaller than 3/4" wide by 2 3/4" long or so.

Happy national sewing day!

How small a crumb is useless? Hmm! I toss anything less than .5 inches into a bag for bits to use in artsy quilts where a mesh or chiffon will be used to anchor down the tiny pieces. Love your crumbs! The yellow sewing machine is darling.

Very cool.. love your crumbs. This is some intense piecing. Love the sewing machine... yes, I would add the thread!

The crumbs are really fun. Very nice job on the light yellow sewing machine as well. I like yellow better than beige.

Hi Marly! Great use of all those scraps to make more fabric! I shall have to rethink.... I often throw scraps bigger than that away! Love the sewing machine, is is going to be a pretty quilt! :) x

Love your crumb block! I'm working up crumbs this year, too. I toss anything smaller than 1".
Cute sewing machine block : )

Crumbs are addictive . . . I keep lots of different sizes in the crumb boxes - I really like Cathy L's plan to toss the tiniest ones in her flower beds for mulch!

Cute sewing machine - and how neat that it commemorates a special family machine!

Love your crumb block. Great job. Your sewing machine definitively needs some thread. It's cute but will look more "finished" the buttons. If I love the fabric I will keep pieces that are half an inch wide. If I don't really fancy the fabric it has to be at least an inch lol. Just saying.

I agree the machine needs some thread. Very cute. Love the crumbs. It depends on my mood on saving but since my hubby calls me a pack rat, I seem to have lots of 'bits' of fabric in all sizes saved here and there. Moving rooms has me thinking I don't need to buy fabric for years!

I use anything over 3/4" in my sewing and anything smaller I give to my grandsons childcare and school

I keep lots of tiny pieces especially in the fusible scrap bin. To make it into the regular scrap bin it needs to have a seam allowance. LeeAnna at not afraid of color

Such bright and happy made fabric! Every time I see posts like this I think maybe I should be keeping more of the scraps that get tossed... and then I keep tossing them :)

I only save things I know I will use. For me it is 1 inch strips which I am using for omigosh blocks right now. In general anything smaller than that gets lost in seam allowances though.

I've love to know how you sewed the crumbs together. I tried my hand at crazy quilting and made a bag with some of my yellows, but I don't think that I really did it right.
